What is myomectomy?

There are many treatments for uterine fibroids. Some patients do not need treatment because their symptoms are not obvious. If the patient needs treatment, there are many methods to choose from, especially in the choice of surgical treatment. Myomectomy is currently a more commonly used method for treating uterine fibroids.

Myomectomy is widely used in clinical practice and can be applied to people of all ages. In the past, the concept was that only young women would use myomectomy, and older women would choose to have their uterus removed. However, in developed countries such as Europe and the United States, even older women aged 50 to 60 are choosing myomectomy because the concept of uterine function has changed. Therefore, the number of people undergoing hysterectomy has decreased, and the number of people undergoing myomectomy has increased.

Although they are all uterine fibroid removal surgeries, there are many different ways to do it. The most classic and common one is laparotomy, which requires lower technical skills from the doctor. Laparoscopic fibroid removal is also used clinically, which has the characteristics of fewer abdominal wounds, but the cost is slightly higher. Another method is to use the vagina as a natural channel to remove uterine fibroids from the vagina. The advantage of this operation is that there is no incision and the recovery is fast after the operation, but it requires relatively high technology and is not yet widely available. If the submucosal uterine fibroid is less than 5 cm in diameter, it can also be removed using a hysteroscope.
