What does chocolate cyst mean? Is it serious?

Endometriosis refers to the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic peritoneum. When these ectopic endometrial tissues bleed and proliferate periodically during the menstrual cycle, blood and tissue fragments accumulate in the ovaries to form cysts. Since the blood in the cyst is dark red, similar to chocolate sauce, it is named chocolate cyst. Chocolate cysts are usually benign lesions with relatively small effects on the body and are generally not particularly serious. However, if the disease is acute and the chocolate cyst ruptures, it may be more serious.

Treatment options for chocolate cysts include medication and surgery. Medication is usually aimed at controlling pain and reducing menstrual flow, while surgery may include laparoscopy to remove the cyst or more extensive surgery to treat severe endometriosis.
