What are the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis

What are the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis

Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include increased vaginal discharge, fishy-smelling leucorrhea, vulvar itching, burning sensation, and pain during sexual intercourse. Patients should seek medical attention promptly.

1. Increased vaginal discharge

Due to the infection of pathogenic bacteria, the microecology in the vagina is unbalanced, and the exudate increases under the stimulation of inflammation. Patients will have symptoms of excessive vaginal secretions, which are thin.

2. Fishy odor leucorrhea

When anaerobic bacteria overgrow, they produce amines, which emit a special odor, causing the leucorrhea to have a fishy odor. This odor is usually concentrated in the leucorrhea, especially at night or after activities.

3. Vulvar itching

Vulvar itching is mainly caused by local skin inflammation and irritation. The itching may be limited to the vulva, but it may also spread to the inner thighs or around the anus.

4. Burning sensation

The burning sensation may be due to the inflammatory response that damages the vaginal mucosa and increases sensitivity. Patients may feel a burning sensation in the vulva, sometimes accompanied by redness, swelling, or pain.

5. Pain during sexual intercourse

Pain during intercourse can result from vaginal inflammation caused by bacterial infection, which can cause the vaginal walls to become fragile and sensitive. This pain usually occurs during penetration or friction and can range in severity from mild discomfort to severe pain.

For bacterial vaginosis, vaginal secretion smear microscopy is recommended to evaluate the microbial flora. Treatment measures include oral antibiotics such as clindamycin or doxycycline. Patients should pay attention to personal hygiene, change underwear frequently, avoid wearing tight clothing, and keep the vulva dry and clean.
