Does cervical erosion need to be treated immediately?

Cervical erosion is quite common in daily life. For some people who do not know medical knowledge, they often worry when they first hear about cervical erosion, thinking that cervical erosion means that the cervix is "rotten". Therefore, most people think that once cervical erosion occurs, it must be treated immediately. Is this correct?

Cervical erosion is not a disease, but a manifestation of chronic cervicitis. In foreign countries, patients with mild inflammation are generally not treated, but only undergo cytological screening and receive corresponding treatment based on the cytological results. The term cervical erosion has been abandoned in the West and renamed as cervical columnar epithelial ectopia, which is considered not a pathological change. In my country, cervical erosion has been divided into pathological inflammatory erosion and pseudo-erosion for many years. Pseudo-erosion refers to the red external cervical os due to the increase of estrogen levels in adolescent and pregnant women, which causes the proliferation and outward migration of the columnar epithelium of the cervical canal. No special treatment is required at this time.

At the same time, whether cervical erosion needs treatment should be considered comprehensively according to the degree of cervical erosion in women. For example, cervical erosion can be divided into three categories according to the area of erosion: Ⅰ (mild), Ⅱ (moderate), and Ⅲ (severe). When the erosion area accounts for less than 1/3 of the total area of the cervix, it is mild cervical erosion; when the erosion area accounts for 1/3 to 2/3 of the total area of the cervix, it is called moderate cervical erosion; when the erosion area exceeds 2/3 of the total area of the cervix, it is called severe cervical erosion. Generally speaking, when women with cervical erosion have abnormal secretions, contact bleeding and other symptoms, they need to be treated.
