6 Complications of Ovarian Cysts

6 Complications of Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are common benign ovarian tumors that can occur in people of any age, but are most common in women of childbearing age. Ovarian cysts can be divided into cystic, solid and other types of tumors, but no matter what type of tumor, there is a risk of complications. The most common ones are the following 6:

1. Pedicle torsion

Pedicle torsion is a common and serious complication of ovarian cysts, with an incidence of about 10%. It is more common in patients with larger tumors when they suddenly change their body position or have violent intestinal peristalsis. The condition is serious and should be treated immediately.

2. Rupture

The incidence of ovarian cyst rupture is 3%, which means that the tumor bursts or is squeezed, and its contents overflow into the abdominal cavity. It can be divided into spontaneous rupture and traumatic rupture.

3. Bleeding

When there is a small amount of bleeding in the ovarian cyst, it usually does not cause symptoms. When the amount of bleeding is large, the patient may have symptoms of peritoneal irritation and even shock.

4. Infection

The infection is usually secondary to pedicle torsion or rupture, and is usually caused by intestinal flora such as Escherichia coli. Patients may experience symptoms of infection such as abdominal pain and fever.

5. Incarceration

Medium-sized ovarian cysts can be squeezed into the uterine rectal fossa and become incarcerated, causing urinary or defecation disorders.

6. Changes in the endometrium

Endometrial changes are common in ovarian cysts with abnormal endocrine effects.
