Will uterine myoma lead to masculinization after hysterectomy?

Will uterine myoma lead to masculinization after hysterectomy?

For patients with uterine fibroids whose symptoms cannot be improved by expectant therapy or drug therapy and who need surgery but are not eligible for myomectomy, doctors will recommend hysterectomy. In addition, hysterectomy is also one of the most commonly used and basic surgeries in obstetrics and gynecology, and many obstetric and gynecological diseases require hysterectomy.

However, many patients are afraid of hysterectomy and wonder if they can become "men" after hysterectomy.

The maintenance of female sexual characteristics depends on the female hormones produced by the ovaries, which are located on both sides of the uterus, one on each side. In women of childbearing age, the ovaries have periodic development, maturation and ovulation of follicles, producing estrogen and progesterone to maintain female sexual characteristics. The uterus is the place where the fetus is conceived, and the periodic shedding of the endometrium forms menstruation. Therefore, after hysterectomy, as long as one ovary is retained, the secretion of female hormones can be basically maintained at a normal level. Although menstruation will no longer occur and reproductive function will be lost, it will not affect female sexual characteristics.

In addition, hysterectomy can be divided into total hysterectomy, subtotal hysterectomy and partial hysterectomy, and there are different routes such as transabdominal and transvaginal. Whether the fallopian tubes and ovaries are retained will also depend on the patient's condition.
