Still counting calories when eating? Counting your bites may help with weight control

People who are concerned about their figure often calculate how many calories they may eat before preparing each meal. However, according to a new study from Clemson University published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, counting the number of times you chew food in your mouth may be more helpful in controlling your weight.

The first experiment designed by the authors recruited 94 people, who were served food on large and small plates respectively. The two groups were further divided into a group wearing "bite count feedback devices" and a group not wearing them. The results showed that regardless of whether the food was served on a large plate or a small plate, the subjects who wore the "chewing frequency counting feedback device" had a significant reduction in their food intake.

The second experiment recruited 99 subjects, all of whom were equipped with a "chewing frequency counting feedback device" and ate large and small plates of food. But this time, one group was asked to chew each mouthful 12 times, while the other group was asked to chew 22 times. The results showed that those who were given the larger plate of food ate more. Comparisons between the same groups found that because the group that chewed 12 times took larger bites when eating, the average amount of food they ate was actually similar to that of the subjects who chewed 22 times.
