Will high-purine foods definitely cause gout attacks? Nutritionist Lin Shihang: These three types of food may not contain high levels of purine, but they may contain hidden dangers

In winter, people’s appetite increases, and they rush to take supplements, eat a lot of meat and fish, and drink to their heart’s content. Be careful to avoid gout! In particular, gout is often accompanied by metabolic syndrome and the "three highs", such as high blood pressure, high blood lipids, high blood sugar and obesity, which increase health risks. Nutritionist Lin Shihang said that in order to avoid gout attacks, in addition to paying attention to foods high in purine, some foods, although not high in purine, can also cause gout, so you have to be careful!

What is gout?

Gout is mainly caused by abnormal uric acid metabolism. When there is too much uric acid in the body, crystals form in the joints, which can easily cause inflammation and joint pain.

Will taking chlorpromazine cause gout?

Nutritionist Lin Shihang said that in fact, high-purine foods do not necessarily cause gout. Diet only accounts for 20-30% of the impact on uric acid concentration in the body. Studies have found that high-purine foods such as soybeans and mushrooms not only do not increase the risk of gout, but can also reduce the risk. However, if you often eat a lot of meat and fish, drink alcohol and shake drinks, your risk of gout will still increase.

What can gout patients eat?

There are currently no consistent guidelines for the diet of gout patients, so it is recommended to consult a physician and clinical nutritionist, but the common classifications are as follows:

1. Low Purine Foods:

Whole grains (brown rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc.), all fruits, most vegetables (leafy vegetables and melons), eggs, dairy products (fresh milk, cheese), jellyfish skin, sea cucumbers, animal/vegetable oils.

It is recommended that if there is no need to restrict water intake, it is best to drink more than 2000 ml of water every day to help excrete uric acid, so coffee and tea can also be considered drinks that gout patients can drink safely.

2. Foods containing Purin:

Fermented drinks (yogurt, Yakult), lean meat, chicken breast, soy products (soy milk, tofu, dried tofu, etc.), peanuts, cashews, etc. contain about 9-100 mg of purine per 100 grams. You can still eat them in moderation at normal times, but it is recommended to avoid them as much as possible during an acute attack.

Gaopurin foods include animal offal and broth (it is best not to drink the soup base when eating hot pot).

3. High Purine Foods:

Consumption should be reduced during non-acute attacks and avoided as much as possible during acute attacks.

Animal offal, broth (it is best not to drink the soup base when eating hot pot), chicken essence, shellfish (clams, oysters, scallops, shrimps and crabs), some fish (dried fish, sardines, mackerel, tuna, hairtail fish, milkfish)

Although studies have found that soybeans, natto, bean sprouts, and shiitake mushrooms do not increase the risk of gout in healthy people, they should still be avoided during acute attacks of gout. You can also consult a doctor or clinical nutritionist for advice.

Although the purine content of these three types of food is not high, they are hidden mines

Nutritionist Lin Shihang reminds that high-fat foods and alcohol will hinder the metabolism of uric acid, while fructose will increase the production of uric acid. Therefore, it is recommended that gout patients eat less fried foods, avoid drinking alcoholic beverages (especially beer and Shaoxing wine), and also reduce the consumption of hand-shaken drinks.
