One and a half years ago, Ms. Su was 174 cm tall and weighed 119 kg, with a body mass index (BMI) of 39.3, which was considered severely obese. Although she was quite agile working in the operating room, she gradually found her work difficult due to lumbar disc pain. After undergoing orthopedic surgery without any significant improvement, she made up her mind to lose weight.

After multiple evaluations, Ms. Su decided to choose laparoscopic minimally invasive gastrectomy. She lost more than 20 kilograms in half a year after the surgery. She then adopted a lifestyle of eating less and exercising more. In the past year and a half, she has lost 54 kilograms and maintained her weight at 65 kilograms. The load and pain on her lumbar spine have been significantly improved, and she has become more flexible. Moreover, the originally round face with crowded features has become more three-dimensional due to the successful weight loss. The appearance has become more beautiful and the person is full of confidence.

Severe obesity mortality rate doubles; bariatric surgery becomes a recommended option

Lin Jianhua, director of the Weight Control Center of Changbin Show Chwan Memorial Hospital, said that when the BMI exceeds 35, the mortality and disease complication rates are more than twice that of the average person. If you have tried various methods and have suffered a lot but still cannot lose weight, you can consider laparoscopic minimally invasive weight loss surgery, which commonly includes gastric banding, gastric reduction and gastric bypass. The treatment mechanisms are different, so you need to fully discuss with your doctor before the operation.

Gastric banding is mainly used to limit stomach capacity, but patients must return for long-term visits and follow the doctor's instructions to achieve satisfactory results; gastric reduction is also a surgery to limit stomach capacity. The surgery will remove part of the stomach fundus, reduce hunger, and the weight loss effect is no less than gastric bypass surgery. More than half of the surgeries in Asia use this method.

Gastric bypass surgery combines the dual effects of volume restriction and reduced absorption. Due to the mechanism of the gastrointestinal tract, it can effectively reduce weight and treat more than 80% of diabetic patients.
