Correctly understand cervical erosion to avoid misunderstandings

Cervical erosion is a common gynecological disease. We must learn to correctly understand the disease itself to avoid falling into misunderstandings.

1. Cervical erosion does not mean that the cervix is rotten

Gynecologists often say that "nine out of ten women have cervical erosion", which shows that cervical erosion is very common in women. Literally, "erosion" can easily give people a misconception. In fact, cervical erosion is fundamentally different from erosion in other parts of the body. It is named after a visual inspection by an instrument, not that the cervix is really rotten. When the disease occurs, the pink squamous epithelium at the external os of the cervix will be covered by a thin layer of red columnar epithelium, like a layer of red plastic film covering the external os of the cervix. Through it, you can see the capillaries underneath. Compared with the surrounding pink area, this red area looks particularly abrupt. It looks like ulceration under the naked eye, but it is not.

2. Not all cervical erosions require treatment

Cervical erosion is clinically divided into two types: true erosion and false erosion. Generally, false erosion does not require special treatment. It is mainly caused by the columnar epithelium covering the external cervical opening during the menstrual period. If the cervix is examined at this time, the manifestation is very similar to that of true erosion. Even if it is diagnosed as true erosion, whether treatment is needed should be determined based on the specific symptoms and the proportion of the eroded area to the entire cervical area. Generally speaking, if the cervix is mildly eroded and there are no other specific symptoms such as local redness, swelling, pus discharge, etc., the patient does not need special treatment first. Just carefully observe the changes in the body and have regular check-ups.
