Causes of infection after abortion

Causes of infection after abortion

A variety of complications may occur during and after the abortion operation, such as abortion syndrome, uterine perforation, postoperative infection, postoperative bleeding, missed suction and incomplete suction, etc. Among them, postoperative infection is an important complication of artificial abortion, which often occurs within 1 to 7 days after the operation. Patients often show fever, lower abdominal pain, leucorrhea turbidity or irregular vaginal bleeding. Initially, it is acute endometritis. If not treated in time, it can spread to the myometrium, adnexa, peritoneum, and even develop into sepsis.

Post-abortion infection is closely related to bacterial infection. The pathogens that cause infection mainly include anaerobic streptococci, hemolytic streptococci, staphylococci, Escherichia coli, etc. Most patients are mixed infections of several bacteria. Among them, the main ways of causing infection include:

Poor vaginal cleanliness before artificial abortion, changes in the internal environment of the body or damage to the uterine wall during the operation, the invasion of bacteria and the resulting infection; or bacteria entering the vagina from the outside before, during or after the operation, such as incomplete disinfection of surgical instruments, dressings, gloves, etc., which may bring in pathogens; the lack of sterile concept during the operation by the surgeon is also a cause of postoperative infection. At the same time, incomplete uterine suction, premature sexual intercourse after abortion, poor personal hygiene habits and other factors can also allow external bacteria to invade the reproductive tract and cause infection.
