TCM treatment for amenorrhea: Tiaojing Decoction

Li, 30 years old, had suffered from functional uterine bleeding during adolescence. In addition, she had two episodes of heavy bleeding before and after childbirth three years ago. After treatment by Western medicine, the bleeding stopped, but she had almost no milk, her hair fell out, and then she began to experience amenorrhea. She had a sallow complexion, was thin and weak, felt tired, was afraid of cold, had dry skin, felt dizzy, had dry eyes and was afraid of light, had a greatly decreased appetite, sweated and was short of breath after the slightest activity, had soreness in the waist and intestines, had little bowel movements, had a pale tongue with teeth marks on the edges and a white tongue coating, and had a deep, thin and weak pulse.

Seeing that the situation was getting worse, Li decided to see a Chinese medicine doctor. The Chinese medicine doctor diagnosed that he had amenorrhea, and that he had a deficiency of both qi and blood, and spleen and kidney diseases. The Chinese medicine doctor gave the following prescriptions and usage.

Tiaojing Decoction

Prescription: 6 grams of old mountain ginseng (single packet, decocted separately), 15 grams each of astragalus, poria, rehmannia root, white peony root, 3 grams of cinnamon heart, 10 grams each of angelica root, donkey-hide gelatin (single packet, melted), and Millettia reticulata, and 5 longan pulps.

Usage: Take 1 dose daily, decocted in water twice, and take once in the morning and evening respectively. For the first course of treatment, take 7 doses first and then take more according to the situation.

On the follow-up visit, the medicine was still suitable for the pathogenesis, the dry eyes were also reduced, the appetite gradually increased, the spirit was good, and the abdominal distension after eating was relieved. However, the previous prescription needed to be changed to remove white peony root, add 15 grams each of charred hawthorn and Shenqu, and 12 grams of Morinda officinalis, and continue to take it. On the second visit, the complexion gradually became ruddy, and he felt no pain. A month ago, he was able to have sex without discomfort, and was basically cured.
