Obesity increases risk of infection after uterine fibroid removal

Uterine fibroids (UF) are common uterine tumors in women, with an incidence of about 25-30%. 50% of these women will experience symptoms, such as vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, severe anemia, etc. Abdominal myomectomy is currently the main treatment method.

Studies have also found that obesity is a major cause of uterine fibroids. Women weighing 70 kg are three times more likely to suffer from fibroids than those weighing 50 kg. Therefore, the latest article published in the Journal of the Formosan Medical Association analyzes the complications and related clinical data of obese patients undergoing abdominal myomectomy. In the trial, a total of 273 women who underwent transabdominal myomectomy were divided into two groups according to BMI ≤30 kg/m2 and >30 kg/m2, and underwent various clinical evaluations.

The test results showed that there were significant differences in age, number of pregnancies, fibroid diameter (DOF), postoperative hemoglobin, length of hospital stay and complications between obese and non-obese people. Obese people had higher DOF values and more complications (including bleeding, postoperative fever, wound infection and intestinal obstruction).

The researchers believe that a high BMI value does have a negative impact on the clinical outcomes of abdominal myomectomy, so obese women should be more careful to prevent possible complications when undergoing such surgery.

The study was published online in the Journal of the Formosan Medical Association.
