Adolescents are in the growth phase and their appetite may increase. However, in addition to supplementing proper nutrition, they should also be careful about whether their weight is increasing too quickly, or even reaching the level of obesity. The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology published a new study from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. The research team found that excessive increase in body mass index (BMI) during adolescence is associated with a higher risk of death from heart disease in adulthood. The authors of the study recruited 37,600 men as subjects and recorded their body mass index when they were 8 and 20 years old. They used this to study whether weight changes during these two important periods of physical development might affect cardiovascular disease-related mortality in adulthood. The experimental results found that an excessive increase in body mass index (more than 7 units) during adolescence was associated with a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease; while the risk was not increased in people who were overweight as children and had a normal body mass index during adolescence.
