What is pelvic inflammatory disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease refers to the female pelvic cavity, reproductive organs including the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, pelvic peritoneum and connective tissue around the uterus, collectively referred to as pelvic inflammatory disease. Common pathogens include streptococci, gonococci, mycoplasma, chlamydia, staphylococci, Escherichia coli, anaerobic bacteria, sexually transmitted pathogens such as gonococci, chlamydia trachomatis, mycoplasma, and herpes virus.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is usually a mixed infection caused by the above pathogens. Although pathogens can be transmitted through blood or lymph, and sometimes directly from surrounding tissues or organs, the vast majority of pelvic inflammatory diseases are caused by vaginal pathogens along the mucosal surface to the pelvic organs. Inflammation of the reproductive organs and surrounding tissues is usually not isolated, but affects and inflames each other.

The natural defense mechanism of the female reproductive system is easily destroyed by factors such as menstruation, childbirth, gynecological surgery, excessive unclean sexual activities, and bad hygiene habits. People who have too frequent sexual activities and homosexuals are prone to pelvic inflammatory disease.

After suffering from pelvic inflammatory disease, if the fallopian tubes are also affected, it will cause adhesions in the lumen and complete blockage, which will affect future pregnancies and cause infertility; if the inflammation is limited to the pelvic connective tissue and the fallopian tubes are not affected, it will not affect reproductive function.
