What are the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis

Due to the special physiological structure of women, coupled with monthly menstruation, if the hygiene is not done properly, it is very easy to be infected by bacteria. Clinically, there are still many female patients who need treatment for bacterial vaginosis. So, if a woman suspects that she has bacterial vaginosis, what are the symptoms?

1. Symptoms are more common in sexually active women. Ten to fifty percent of patients with this disease are asymptomatic, while those with symptoms often complain of grayish-yellow leucorrhea with a fishy odor, vaginal burning and itching.

2. Physical signs: Vulva is red and swollen, vaginal mucosa is congested, grayish red, slightly swollen, and the secretions are mostly homogeneous, thin, grayish white, sometimes milky yellow or greenish, and have a fishy smell. Vaginal pH is usually 5-5.5. Sometimes the amount of leucorrhea is small, only a thin layer, like a membrane covering the congested vaginal wall. A few patients have erythema or ecchymosis on the vaginal wall.

Bacterial vaginosis has symptoms of increased vaginal discharge with a fishy odor, which is caused by the production of amines by the reproduction of anaerobic bacteria. It is often aggravated after sexual intercourse and may be accompanied by mild vulvar itching or burning. Examination shows that the vaginal mucosa has no congestion and inflammation. The discharge is grayish white, uniform, thin, and often adheres to the vaginal wall, but the viscosity is very low, and the discharge is easily wiped off the vaginal wall. Treating male sexual partners is of little value in preventing recurrence.
